Therapeutic potential of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in substance use disorders

LOCATION: Centro Linguistico Ateneo, Padova

More than 20 million people worldwide struggle with cocaine addiction. However, no neurobiological treatment for cocaine has been approved yet. Furthermore, the majority of patients wonder whether there is any viable cure for this chronic, relapsing condition. None of the conventional approaches – often long, arduous, painful, not devoid of relapses – have proven effective in more than a small percentage of patients. After years of research, our team is proud to present the results that have transformed lives of patients and the approach to treating cocaine addiction, and the clinical courses of addiction. This innovative treatment is based on a non-invasive brain stimulation technology called repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), virtually free of any significant side effects. Developed and perfected in our Clinics since the beginning of 2014, with more than 1,000 patients treated thus far, this painless approach has proved to be effective in improving decision-making, and reducing craving for cocaine. In fact, patients undergoing our treatment report a greater control of their actions and a reduction of both craving and relapse. During my lecture, I’ll provide a full overview of the rationale and use of rTMS application as interventional tool for treating Cocaine use disorders and other forms of addictions.
