1. Madrigal and Opera in Venice: through the listening experience of the genre “Madrigal” (characteristic of the sixteenth century Italian culture) certain typical traits will be examined and explained. The birth of modern “Opera”, characteristic of the city of Venice, later expressions of this new genre, will be considered and excerpts from mid-seventeenth to early eighteenth century operas will be played.

2. The second session will be devoted to two musicians who characterized the music of the Venetian republic between the beginning and middle eighteenth century: Antonio Vivaldi and Giuseppe Tartini, respectively active mainly in Venice and Padua. This lecture will take into particular consideration instrumental music and to a lesser extent opera.
